E-Networking, for lack of a better term, allows people to make friends or business connections online. I use "E-networking" since some of the active users of business networking sites, such as LinkedIn, do not like to have their networking sites described as "social".
Online networking has exploded in recent months, with Facebook claiming most of the Canadian pie. Social networking sites are sometimes popular in certain geographical areas, such as Orkut in Brazil, or amongst certain linguistic groups, such as Hi5 amongst Spanish speakers. Networking sites usually have two purposes: business and friendship. Career practitioners may want to have a presence on both types of sites and to select the site they have a presence on based on their client populations.
